Why mid range shooting matters
While three-point shooting gets attention, mid range shots are still one of the
most common scoring opportunities in basketball. Youth players benefit from
learning balance, control, and rhythm before moving farther from the basket.
1. One Dribble Pull-Up
Skill focus: Pull-up jump shot
Players take one strong dribble toward the basket, stop under control,
and shoot a balanced jump shot.
Coaching tip: Emphasize stopping under control before shooting.
2. Elbow Shooting
Skill focus: Spot shooting
Players shoot from the elbows of the key. These are common mid range scoring
spots during games.
Coaching tip: Encourage players to hold their follow-through.
3. Pull-Up From Cone
Skill focus: Shooting off the dribble
Place a cone near the free throw line. Players dribble toward it,
then pull up into a jump shot.
Coaching tip: Teach players to rise straight up after stopping.
4. Two-Dribble Pull-Up
Skill focus: Rhythm shooting
Players take two controlled dribbles before stopping for a mid range jumper.
Coaching tip: Balance is more important than speed.
5. Around The Key Shooting
Skill focus: Shooting from different angles
Players rotate through mid range spots around the key, shooting from each one.
Coaching tip: This drill helps players build scoring confidence quickly.
