Youth Defense Drills for Beginners

Defense starts with effort, balance, and learning how to move without crossing your feet. These beginner-friendly drills teach stance, slides, closeouts, and hustle in simple ways kids can understand.

3 defense drills to run today

1) Mirror Slides

  • Players pair up and face each other.
  • One player is the leader and moves side to side.
  • The other player mirrors with defensive slides.
  • Switch roles after 20–30 seconds.

Coach cue: “Slide, don’t cross.”

2) Cone Closeouts

  • Place a cone on the wing or short corner.
  • Players start in the lane and sprint toward the cone.
  • As they get close, they chop their feet and raise their hands.
  • Focus on balance, not speed alone.

Coach cue: “Hands up, feet down.”

3) Shuffle and Touch

  • Set two cones about 8–10 feet apart.
  • Players defensive slide from one cone to the other.
  • Touch the cone, then slide back.
  • Keep chest up and stay low the whole time.

Coach cue: “Low and quick.”
