Fun Basketball Drills for Kids

The best youth basketball drills are the ones kids actually enjoy. These fun drills build movement, control, confidence, and teamwork while keeping practice exciting.

3 fun basketball drills to run today

1) Red Light, Green Light Dribble

  • Players line up on the baseline with a ball.
  • Coach calls “green light” to dribble forward.
  • Coach calls “red light” and players must stop quickly.
  • Players who lose the ball simply grab it and rejoin.

Coach cue: “Control before speed.”

2) Sharks and Minnows

  • One or two players are the “sharks” in the middle.
  • Everyone else dribbles across the court as the “minnows.”
  • If a shark knocks the ball away, that player becomes a shark.
  • Keep rounds short and fun.

Coach cue: “Protect the ball.”

3) Knockout Layups

  • Players line up for layups.
  • Each player tries to make their layup before the next player catches up.
  • If you miss too many in a row, rotate out and cheer on teammates.
  • Keep it positive and light-hearted.
